another day another billion job applications

I have just applied for another seven jobs including publishing coordinator and junior receptionist as well as a bunch of media-related ones. Morale is so low that I am not expecting a single reply. I didn't receive a reply to any of the last seven I applied for. Not even to thank me for applying.

Mum's coming home early from her work thing. She wasn't supposed to be back until tomorrow afternoon but she's going to be back tonight sometime. I wanted to clean the house for her tomorrow. Instead I've done a half-arsed job tonight.

Jacob seems to be taking to me somewhat. He doesn't spend the first fifteen mintues hiding from/ignoring me. And I got a kiss goodbye today. Hell, that kid should be bloody grateful considering I'm purposely putting myself in an awkward environment just to get to know him better. I hope his useless mother is slathering that kid in sunscreen. He's pale like me with ginger hair and I don't want him becoming so freckled they look like brown splotches.

something sensual in such non-conventional ways

Thank you for the Snowflake Cookie virtual gift, [info]jenepherre! Made me smile after a long day working on Christmas gifts. (And oh hell, I am NOT crafty. Why did I sign up for this???)

Day 06 -- Whatever tickles your fancy

I miss the BFFs. I miss the love. Give me hugs? (Bandom related. My non-bandom friends may want to skip this one.) )

Perception

MusicianSomething to think about….

Washington, DC Metro Station on a cold January morning in 2007. The man with a violin played six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time approximately. 2 thousand people went through the station, most of them on their way to work. After 3 minutes a middle aged man noticed there was a musician playing. He slowed his pace and stopped for a few seconds and then hurried to meet his schedule.

4 minutes later:

The violinist received his first dollar: a woman threw the money in the hat and, without stopping, continued to walk.

6 minutes:

A young man leaned against the wall to listen to him, then looked at his watch and started to walk again.

10 minutes:

A 3-year old boy stopped but his mother tugged him along hurriedly. The kid stopped to look at the violinist again, but the mother pushed hard and the child continued to walk, turning his head all the time. This action was repeated by several other children. Every parent, without exception, forced their children to move on quickly.

45 minutes:

The musician played continuously.  Only 6 people stopped and listened for a short while. About 20 gave money but continued to walk at their normal pace.  The man collected a total of $32.

1 hour:

He finished playing and silence took over. No one noticed. No one applauded, nor was there any recognition.

No one knew this, but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the greatest musicians in the world. He played one of the most intricate pieces ever written, with a violin worth $3.5 million dollars. Two days before Joshua Bell sold out a theater in Boston where the seats averaged $100.

This is a true story. Joshua Bell playing incognito in the metro station was organized by the Washington Post as part of a social experiment about perception, taste and people’s priorities.

The questions raised:

*In a common place environment at an inappropriate hour, do we perceive beauty?

*Do we stop to appreciate it?

*Do we recognize talent in an unexpected context?

One possible conclusion reached from this experiment could be this:

If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world, playing some of the finest music ever written, with one of the most beautiful instruments ever made.

How many other things are we missing?

Note to self.

Wow.

Wow. Life on the internet has been really slow the past three days. Where is everybody?

Lloyd (my car) got serviced today so I drove mum's car as she left it here when she went on her work pissup long weekend conference. When I drove up the driveway this afternoon the dogs got ridiculously excited thinking it was mum home. You can clearly tell who they love more.

I'm waiting for Jason The Mechanic to return Lloyd any minute now. I'm hoping to Christ he doesn't need anything major done. NO MONEY.

Went and had Thai and coffee with Lisa last night. It was nice. We're in similar positions when it comes to job hunting and permanent spinsterhood so it's nice to moan together. Though unlike me she does have a life to keep her mostly preoccupied. My life consists of sporadic meetings with either Lisa or Jen, work, Doctor Who and reading.

Three hours later... Lloyd has been delivered. Nothing needs to be done. Wheel alignment would be good at some point and new squirter things (that's a technical term) but I won't worry about that until January.

Waters of Mars is on TV. "The Doctor, Doctor, fun." Hee.

"Ohhh, I really should go."

I've seen lovers dancing in windows

You guys! Look how HAPPY Craig is!

:D

It's just that... He was so upset at The Factory show and WE CRIED. All of us. And he thought he was done with music. It was one of the most heart-wrenching experiences of my life. And now look at that smile! On stage! I just want to hug them both and ruffle their ridiculous hair.

It's safe to say I suck at doing anything daily so here are the past three days of the 30 days meme. I'm going to actually post another one later today.

Day 03 -- Your favorite television program
Gilmore Girls, without a doubt. Sometimes I swear they were looking over my shoulder or reading my journal. They even stole our inside jokes like zonk kisses.

Day 04 -- Your favorite book
This one is really tough because I love so many books. If I had to choose a favorite, it would probably be one from childhood like The Velveteen Rabbit. There are authors I love and read all their books and there are also books I go back to in times of trouble like Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis. But somehow those just aren't "favorites".

Day 05 -- Your favorite quote
"After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music." - Aldous Huxley

There is just something peaceful about this quote. It embodies my vision of music as an emotional conduit. Not to mention, I always dug Aldous Huxley.

Suggestions for a relatively cheap Classical Japanese dictionary? I couldn't really find much information through google.

a virtual look at my room

I have this niggling feeling that there was somebody I wanted to call today but I can't remember who it was. I just know that it was somebody who had to be called during trading hours. Useless brain.

Well the dilemma of whether to go out tonight or not has been resolved. Work called this morning and I have to go in tomorrow, thus ruining any chance of a late night tonight. While I am pleased to have picked up an extra shift as they have only rostered me for three days next week, I hate that they always mess up any plans I have. I actually had things I was going to do tomorrow, like use my guest pass to check out the gym, wash my car and spend some quality time with a book.

I went on a bit of a splurge today and bought myself two new tops, a pair of shorts and a necklace. All on my credit card. My crazy logic is that I'm using whatever splurge money I have to pay off the credit card so I as long as I spend less than what I'm paying off it will all work out in the end. Shh... I'd rather live in ignorance. However, I was a good girl and bought Christmas presents for both dad and Julie the Stupid.

I've just spent several hours fiddling around on the IKEA website.

This is the result... )

The phrase 'limiter removal':

Is there a better term for the second part/noun than '取り外し' (or presumably 外し alone)?
Also, would the first part typically be in katakana?

(For some reason I started out thinking that the term '開始' was appropriate for the second part, but that turned out to be completely different. I may or may not have misremembered something with a similar pronunciation. *wonders*)

God I am absolutely infuriating. I can't stand myself sometimes.

I have Friday and Saturday off work and yet again cannot find anything to do with my days off. When I am working there are always things I'm having to cancel on because it's simply to hard to organise the logistics when I have work the next day.

Lisa has just invited me to a single's Christmas party in the city Friday night. You'd think I'd be excited. Social outing! Potential to meet people! But I don't know if I want to go. To be quite honest things that are obviously date-centred make me ridiculously nervous. I don't know if I'd feel comfortable being at an event where the whole pretext is to find a date. But then maybe I need to step out of my comfort zone more.

I'm just not confident in myself at the moment. And when I don't feel confident I am constantly anxious.

その あとで。。。

Dear kind all,

i am confused because of あとで rules. please help!

so i have learnt that the verb before あとで gets た form.

ご飯を食べた後で 寝ました。

i was happy with that rule untill yesterday when i came across the sneaky その あとで
(yeah, JLPT level 4 :)

きょうとへ____そのあとで ひろしまへ いきました。

1.行こう 2.行き 3。行く 4.行って

and the lovely た form is not even an option...
Could you please explain what rule is hiding behind this one?

Thank you vefy much in advance!!!

With JLPT hovering above, your help would be very-very much appreciated!

bah to corporations

Bah I hate corporations. Loathe them. Why do they have to make everything so confusing? Firstly, this table that I was shown when I joined up, plus the way the girl explained it to me, made it sound like if I visited an MBF dentist they would pay for 70% plus another $24.85. What they actually mean is that you receive $24.85 more coverage than a standard set benefit, though I'd be fucked if I knew what that meant. Then, in the policy I was given, it said that the waiting period for General Dental including extractions is 2 months. Except apparently wisdom teeth don't count even though they're teeth too dammit. So I have to wait freaking 12 months to get cover for that.

Why do they have to be so confusing? I probably would've still gone with them if I knew all this. Why can't they simply state the facts?

Note, these questions are rhetorical.

A bit of help

A bit of help please, I want to write to a Japanese person, giving them advice on how what to do if they come over to study aboard. Here's what I have so far (hopefully there is not spelling mistakes.) If you guys could tell me if it looks good, and help where its needed, I'd really appreciate that.

Marfrukto, aŭ marisko?

Ĉi tie iu demandis kiel oni diras "I am very allergic to shellfish" en multaj lingvoj.

Kiel oni esperantigus "shellfish"?

Mi volas diri: Mi havas grandan alergion kontraŭ marfruktoj.

(Bonvoluuuu ekskuzu mian malbonan esperanton... Mi ne konas neniun, krom homoj en-lineo, ke parolas esperanton, nek ke volas lerni ĝin kun mi ;_; )

No way

And now, on top of everything else that's kept me from updating LJ, my car is in a currently indeterminate state of fixing. (As in, the repair shop won't call and I can't drive it as-is, so I can't go to work or anywhere else.)

This has not been my end-of-year in many ways. In other ways, it's been lovely.

OMG. This post is so cryptic if you haven't seen me IRL in the last two months. I should change my background color to black for the appropriate angsty/goth factor.
